CORWEN. | CORWEN. A band from Switzerland’s Basle who will interpolate the heavy and the melodic. Despite the simple line-up, the music is dynamic, powerful and puts a fist in your guts. In February ’99, Cédric Russo, Samuel Schmid and Jannik Willms first teamed up to form a band by the name of GUMPEN. Two years later, Jannik Willms left the group, to be replaced by Michael Flückiger. The members of the band changed and so their sounds turned much harder and more aggressive. 15 minutes of fame and Basle-wide success followed as the band’s style was easily recognisable. The time had come to record an album. And September ’04 was the moment to do so. In Jari Altermatt’s studio Deadend Records, GUMPEN recorded eight songs for their debut album. Shortly after the recording was completed, drummer Samuel Schmid left the band, however. Out of the depths of the digital-hardcore-punk scene, drummer dex proved to be the man of the hour. And changes had to be made: some of the songs were to be kept, but the name of the band was changed to CORWEN. Guitars tuned down, bass drums doubled, bass distorted, and screams, wails and shouts eerie enough to shatter stones, CORWEN are ready. CORWEN feed on the live setting, conquering sombrely, but also by excessive violence. A thundering stream of lava, spreading as relentlessly as the black death. |
